Why Dry Mouth Is A Concern

Most people think dry mouth is just uncomfortable.

But saliva is your mouth’s natural defense system.

It helps neutralize acids, wash away bacteria, and protect enamel from damage.

Those with Sjogren's disease are known to have the driest mouths in the world and the stats are not good. They have 7-8 TIMES the risk of ending up with no teeth. A new protocol is currently being testing on these patients and is showing early promise. If it can help them it be worth discussing with your trusted dental professional.

When saliva is reduced—especially for hours at a time—your teeth are left exposed.

Now add a retainer, aligner, night guard, or snore guard (which can block what little saliva does flow at night)

and you may be creating an environment where acids and bacteria can sit against your teeth for hours.

This is sometimes called: “Teeth Under Plastic”

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Wake up with a dry mouth
  • Wear a retainer or aligner overnight
  • Use a CPAP or breathe through your mouth
  • Take medications that reduce saliva
  • Have acid reflux or frequently consume acidic drinks

NOTE: if you take the quiz above there are many other situations that could affect your smile.

A new protocol can turn a removable dental appliance into a pH protective mineralizing device. Whatever appliance you may be wearing may be used for this strategy and if a person has serious dry mouth and does not wear an appliance an even more effective device for this purpose may be custom made by most dental professionals.
